Fairies Wings at the Honey Brook Library!

Who doesn't want to have Fairy Wings??  Honey Brook Library spent an afternoon making that happen.  We registered 10 children grades K-5, and each child needed to be accompanied by an adult to help them create their wings.

Supplies Needed:
4 wire hangers per child
2 rectangles of cardboard (we cut up boxes) size 3 inch by 4 inch
colored duct tape
pliers & wire cutters & scissors
silk flowers and greens
4 black knee high stockings per child
ribbon - assorted
glue guns
elastic
twist ties - 4 per child
glitter glue

Step One - Wings

Bend your 4 wire hangers to the shape you want your wings to look like. On one cardboard rectangle, place the hook part of the wire hanger on each corner to form your wings.  Secure each wire hook part with a piece of duct tape.  Place the 2nd cardboard rectangle on top of the first so that the wire hooks are in between the 2 pieces of cardboard.  Wrap duct tape around the 2 pieces of cardboard until wire hangers are secure.
 Step Two - Flowers and ribbons

On your "base", (your cardboard wrapped with duct tape) glue with a hot glue gun, greens, silk flowers, ribbons, bows, and whatever you would like to decorate with.  We made up freezer size bags of flowers and greens for each child and let them decide which pack they wanted to use.

Step Three - Putting the Stockings on the Wings

Take your 4 black knee high stockings, and cover each wire hanger (shaped as a wing) with one.  When you reach the base with the stocking, use a twist tie to secure stocking to the "wing".

Ms Nancy helps this little Fairy put her stockings on her wings.

                      Working hard!

We love that we had Dads there too!

Step Four - Decorating Your Wings

To decorate the stocking part of your wings, we used colored glitter glue.  Some glued roses on to the tips of their wings with the glue gun. Some left them blank.

Step Five - Putting on the Elastic

Cut 2 strips of elastic per child.  You can either wrap around the base and secure with more duct tape, or tie them onto the bottom part of each wing (where you secured the twist tie).

Showing off our wings!

Pink, white, and red flowers were the choices we put in the pre-made bags.

Gaming Nights

Gaming nights at the Honey Brook Library have been a great success!  Tweens and teens from ages 8-16 bring their own electronic devices or take turns using the Library's Xbox Kinect and IPad 2.

We provide snacks and drinks for the 2 hour program.  There is no structure.  The only rules are be polite and take turns.

The Xbox Kinect is great fun.! You don't use a hand held controller,  you just use your body and hands to control what is happening on screen.  These boys are playing the Star Wars game and using "The Force" to interact with the game.  We also have a sports game, and Wipeout 2.

Kids are also encouraged to bring their own Nintendo DS's.  DS's are cool because they can sense when they are near another DS.  Kids can then play a game against each other or with another person at the same time.

Finally we have our Library's IPad 2.  Kids can take turns using the apps that are on the IPad.  The top one right now is Minecraft.

Fabulous Poem!!

The Reading Mother
by Strickland Gillilan

I had a mother who read to me
Sagas of pirates who scoured the sea.
Cutlasses clenched in their yellow teeth;
"Blackbirds" stowed in the hold beneath.
I had a Mother who read me lays
Of ancient and gallant and golden days;
Stories of Marmion and Ivanhoe,
Which every boy has a right to know.
I had a Mother who read me tales
Of Gelert the hound of the hills of Wales,
True to his trust till his tragic death,
Faithfulness lent with his final breath.
I had a Mother who read me the things
That wholesome life to the boy heart brings-
Stories that stir with an upward touch.
Oh, that each mother of boys were such!
You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be --
I had a Mother who read to me.
